ABOUT US

As one of the 56 USA Track and Field associations, the USATF South Carolina Association (USATF) governs the sports of track & field, long distance running, cross country, race walking, and mountain/ultra-distance/trail running within the state of South Carolina. We create, conduct, and oversee programs to provide opportunities for athletes of all ages to participate in the sport.

The USATF South Carolina Association is a registered 501(c)(3), registered with the State of South Carolina, Office of Secretary of State (SCSOS).

OUR MISSION

Developing interest and participation in Athletics at all ages and all levels throughout the entire state of South Carolina. We promote Athletics and athletes by conducting fair competitions and other events, and by cooperating with and encouraging other organizations which may do so. We generate public awareness, appreciation, and support for Athletics and for USATF, and this association. We create opportunities for athletes and Athletics events, and generate sponsorships to aid the South Carolina Association in fulfilling its purposes and duties. We promote equality and diversity of representation at all levels of participation in USATF activities.

OUR HISTORY

The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) was created in 1878 to govern the sport of track & field. One hundred years later, The Amateur Sports Act of 1978 established the United States Olympic Committee, and created governing bodies for each sport. With AAU having expanded to govern multiple sports, the Act prohibited a single body from governing more than one sport. In 1979, The Athletic Congress (TAC) was created to govern track & field.

The South Carolina Association of the Athletics Congress, Inc. was incorporated as a non-profit corporation in 1984, with Articles of Incorporation filed with the South Carolina Secretary of State on August 21, 1984. On May 20, 1988, the South Carolina Association of the Athletics Congress, Inc. was administratively dissolved by forfeiture by the South Carolina Secretary of State for failure to pay franchise tax (file a tax return) by the required deadline. By July 27, 1989, the applicable tax returns had been filed, and the assessed interest and penalties had been paid. On August 08, 1989, the Secretary of State issued a Certificate of Compliance, and on August 11, 1989, application for reinstatement was made and approved, the application filing fee ($25) was paid, and the South Carolina Association of the Athletics Congress, Inc. was reinstated as a non-profit corporation.

In 1992, The Athletics Congress, Inc. changed its name to USA Track & Field (USATF).

Though the South Carolina Association of the Athletics Congress, Inc.  began informally using the name South Carolina Association of USA Track & Field, an amendment was filed with the South Carolina Secretary of State on December 06, 2000, to make the name change official. The Association is now formally known as South Carolina Association of USA Track & Field, while informally known  as USATF South Carolina, USATF South Carolina Association, and USATFSC or USATF-SC.
